Narration Concering Books Emily's Shoes

Well, this is the first book I've ever read about someone with a shoe fetish, so there's that. Putting that to the side, I found this book a bit difficult to get through because the protagonist alternates between being endearing and being just downright pathetic. It becomes clear enough that his bond with women's shoes (only leather, mind you) is a surrogate for missing human connections and a sense of safety and belonging only such connections provide, but that in itself is not enough to drive a good narrative. What rescues this novel from sliding into bathos are some of the scenes that inject an element of excitement and even danger into the mood of the work, and the writing itself, which is quite good, though that is to be expected from a writer of Bolger's reputation. My favorite scenes involve the main character, Michael, facing off with some of his demons in the person of a pushy priest, and there is a winningly comic scene involving a group of street prostitutes, but those come pretty far into the novel, so be prepared to wade deeply for the payoff.

the writing was better than its content, particularly at the start. but mildly sexual shoe fetishism with a helping of lighthouses and virgin mary sightings really didn't grab me.

Dermot Bolger is an Irish novelist, playwright and poet born in Finglas, a suburb of Dublin. His work is often concerned with the articulation of the experiences of working-class characters who, for various reasons, feel alienated from society. Bolger questions the relevance of traditional nationalist concepts of Irishness, arguing for a more plural and inclusive society. In the late 1970s BolgerWell, this is the first book I've ever read about someone with a shoe fetish, so there's that.
