Earl B. Pilgrim was born in St. Anthony in 1939. He received his early education in Roddickton, later studying Forestry at the College of Trades and Technology in St. Johns. He began his adult career in 1960 as an Infantryman in the Canadian Army, serving with the Princess Patricias Canadian Light Infantry. While there, he became involved in the sport of boxing, eventually becoming the CanadianMeandering in its storytelling and rife with confusing non sequiturs, this book is nevertheless an important historical account of early settlement in NL, the harsh struggle to survive, and the tenacious commitment of one British doctor determined to bring healthcare and economic wellness to the region. A fascinating read.

There are many books written about Newfoundland. I find them interesting and full of culture. This story goes into more detail about a previous story I read. It is another version of Dr. Grenfell's Adrift on an Ice Pan. It's probably not a great idea to read a book about someone freezing to death on the ice when the temperature outside is below freezing and it's a blizzard. It makes the reader really cold. This tragedy is a series of bad choices made. To put it bluntly- don't take short cuts.
