I hate cliffhangers and I dont like mini stories that I have to wait to find out what happens next. I am very frustrated!! Ok, now that I vented I feel better! Don't get me wrong, I liked the story, just frustrated that I have to wait.This is 102 pages of getting to know about Carlene and her life currently. She has lived in a shelter for a year. She lost her boyfriend in a tragic accident. We dont get privy to all that transpired in that tragedy, but learn about what she does with her life now.Carlene is a woman hiding from her past by throwing her life into helping people rebuild their own broken lives. When she stops at the church to pay her respects to her deceased fiancé, she could never imagine being able to move on in her life because of the crushing guilt of Chris' death. When a handsome stranger shows her some kindness and interest, it awakens a spark in her that proves that maybe she can fulfill the dreams of her past. I really enjoyed the characters in this one. We start off with Carlene and Melisa 2 good friends that meet at their lowest points. While they are helping at the Oasis Shelter where they were once resident's, Melisa convinces Carlene to move on and start a new life for herself. Unsure if she can and with the reassurance that she is always welcome back she heads out for a fresh start. As she is struggling to make it work, an incident changes everything. I received a copy from the author in exchange for my honest review, so here it is. WOW, this one threw me for a loop. A very sad and heart-wrenching story. Carlene is living and working at a shelter, trying to make her life better. The shelter has helped her after her fiance's dead and she was left alone. The guilt she feels from his death is tearing out her heart and her soul is damaged forever. On the anniversary of that fateful day, she stops at the local church to light a candle in Chris'
Carlene was part of a tragic accident that killed her fiance. She left everything she knew behind and has been hiding out helping others in need. It's been four years since the accident and she meets Nick. They talk and share a kiss that gives her the desire to start her life over. She doesn't know if she will ever see him again. She gets a wonderful job and her life starts to improve greatly. Another chance encounter has her meeting Nick again and she finds he has a few secrets she didn't know.
I really wanted to love this story from start to finish, but there were a few nagging hang-ups that just couldnt be ignored. Firstly, it was very predictable. It moved quite quickly in the beginning, and there was a lot of hinting at the past that haunted Carlene, and the reason she found herself in her current position, which meant I never really connected with her character.
